The Barossa Valley Cheesecellar, located in the heart of Angaston, is the passion and brainchild of Victoria McClurg. The Cheesecellar is a food provedore and incubator, with an abundance of local produce and experiences that enables visitors to immerse themselves in the world of cheese. Customers are taught to understand the differences between brie and camembert with a ‘taste off’, learn how to cook halloumi, benchmark their palate and experience an array of cheese parings with wine, ciders and tea. Having launched in 2003, the Cheesecellar has since become an integral part of the tapestry in the Barossa.

John Culshaw

John Culshaw is the founder, owner and operator of the Majestic Hotels group, incorporating five accommodation hotels across South Australia and employing 138 South Australians. As a volunteer Board Director of the Adelaide Convention Bureau for the past four years, John has been able to offer a unique perspective to the organisation’s tourism focus and willingly shares his market and operational intelligence to benefit the industry. John’s strong network and ‘common sense/commercial’ approach made a significant contribution to the establishment of a Convention Bid Fund, aiding conversion of conventions for Adelaide and contributing to the two most recent expansions of the Adelaide Convention Centre. Personally, the investment made by John into the local industry has been enormous, with not only a focus on diverse products in Adelaide, but also incorporating a $10m investment in regional South Australia with the Port Augusta property, Oasis Apartments. John’s vision has ensured Majestic Hotels provides the Adelaide accommodation/tourism market with a diverse range of products, cementing a truly sustainable business (30 years) in a market that is ever growing and evolving.

Kelsey Reilly is a student at the University of South Australia, studying a Bachelor of Business, specialising in Tourism and Event Management. Kelsey grew up on a date plantation and vineyard in regional South Australia. This gave her an appreciation for agriculture, food and wine, and an interest in rural tourism. Kelsey has solo travelled extensively throughout 18 countries, and has become proficient in German after living in Germany for 8 months. She has also undertaken two international study tours to France and South Korea where she was a recipient of the New Colombo Plan Student Mobility Scholarship. Kelsey has volunteered at many events and has recently undertaken a placement at Tourism Barossa. She has always had an interest in tourism and throughout her time at university has developed a particular interest for food and wine tourism in regional destinations.

2017 marks the 100th birthday of Peterborough’s beautiful town carriage – a 1917 first-class sleeper that regularly crossed the Nullarbor. In January, the District Council of Peterborough transformed it into the Town Carriage Museum, a free-of-charge tourism experience that tells Peterborough’s dramatic story. The Carriage – together with a new RV Park, a Main Street upgrade and a new Yellow i accreditation – is the apogee of a three-year program implemented by Council to reposition the town as a must-do destination for grey nomads.

Already awarded an Order of Australia medal, Sam embodies everything a taxi driver should be. He’s always neat, professional and willing to go to great lengths to deliver outstanding service to his customers. We congratulate Sam on this award and for being such a great ambassador for South Australia’s taxi industry.

City of Adelaide’s ‘Welcome China’ Project was developed to maximise the tourism and economic benefits to the City from direct China Southern Airlines flights that commenced in December 2016. From the first flight landing, the ‘Welcome China’ Project allowed Chinese visitors to use their favourite digital platform ‘WeChat’ to find out about Adelaide. Visitors received a Chinese Visitor Map featuring key City attractions and were welcomed by bilingual signage in taxis, information centres, shops and at various points around the City. With the help of WeChat linked by QR codes, Chinese visitors were able to navigate around the City and be led to China relevant businesses.
This award recognises a tourism business or attraction that has delivered outstanding tourism products or service to international visitors, demonstrating an understanding of the international visitor and markets.

As the second oldest zoo in the nation, Adelaide Zoo represents a significant part of South Australia’s heritage and social history, and exists for the purpose of saving species from extinction, as well as connecting people with nature. Adelaide Zoo is home to more than 2,500 animals and 250 species of exotic and native mammals, birds, reptiles and fish. Since first opening to the public in 1883, generations of South Australians have shared in the wonder of a visit to the enchanting zoo, now recognised as one of Adelaide’s most iconic attractions.
